A apneia do sono é uma doença crônica e evolutiva caracterizada pela pelas paradas repetidas e temporárias da respiração enquanto a pessoa dorme. A respiração cessa porque as vias aéreas colapsam, impedindo que o ar chegue até os pulmões.
Entre os principais sintomas da apneia estão ronco e sonolência diurna, embora muitos pacientes não os percebam.
Buscando mais informações sobre a doença, a Rádio Gazeta FM entrevistou a Dra. Aline Orsi – Otorrinolaringologista , na cidade de Ribeirão Preto.
Conforme dito pela doutora, o diagnóstico médico da doença é feito por meio de um exame chamado de polissonografia, que é o monitoramento do sono por equipamentos eletrônicos. O exame clínico é indicado para que seja avaliada a condição do paciente e deve ser feito por um médico com especialização na área.

De acordo com a Sociedade Brasileira de Endocrinologia e Metabologia , a apneia do sono acomete aproximadamente 30% da população adulta mundial. A maior parte dos pacientes, entre 85% e 90%, convive com a doença sem receber o diagnóstico e continua sem tratamento.
Mudanças nos hábitos de vida podem contribuir muito com a melhora da apneia do sono. Perder peso, evitar o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas , dormir de lado, evitar consumo de comidas pesadas antes de dormir e evitar o fumo são algumas medidas simples que podem evitar problemas futuros.
