A ação durou menos de quatro minutos e, apesar de o valor roubado não ser revelado, acredita-se que uma grande quantidade de dinheiro foi levada.
É o nono furto de caixa eletrônico registrado no país somente neste ano. Outros dois assaltos foram contabilizados do outro lado da fronteira, na Irlanda, e a polícia suspeita que diferentes gangues possam estar envolvidas com esse tipo de assalto.
O caixa eletrônico roubado no domingo ficava na parede de uma loja de conveniência de um posto de combustível. Pelas imagens do circuito interno de televisão, é possível ver pelo menos três pessoas usando roupas pretas e com os rostos cobertos.
As câmeras capturaram o momento em que a escavadeira se aproxima, junto com o outro veículo, por volta das 4h30.
Primeiro, a escavadeira é usada para arrancar o caixa eletrônico, que é deixado no chão.
Uma pessoa sai correndo e volta, em seguida, acompanhada do veículo. Então, a escavadeira é usada novamente para colocar o caixa eletrônico em cima do carro.
Os ladrões fogem em seguida, deixando a escavadeira para trás.
Em março, a polícia criou uma equipe especial para investigar esse tipo de assalto. Há um suspeito preso.
O dono da última loja afetada, Martin O’Kane, acredita que por causa desse tipo de ataque “haverá cada vez menos caixas eletrônicos”. No Reino Unido, é muito comum caixas eletrônicos nas paredes, no meio da rua, sem proteção.
“Agora basicamente roubam um a cada semana. Provavelmente, não vou ter mais um caixa aqui e a comunidade local vai sair perdendo”, lamentou.
