Pesquisadores brasileiros desenvolveram um cicatrizante poderoso, combina sangue de búfalo e veneno de cascavel: o selante de fibrina. O produto ainda está em fase de testes.

Veneno de cobra como solução

Essa pesquisa de ponta cujos resultados ajudaram Vera, o Globo Rural começou a acompanhar 27 anos atrás. Era novembro de 1990 quando Nelson Araújo foi até a UNESP para falar sobre o assunto pela primeira vez. A equipe, na época, havia visitado o CEVAP, o Centro de Estudos de Venenos e Animais Peçonhentos.

Em quase 30 anos, muito mudou. Os protocolos científicos na UNESP se modificaram. As cobras que fazem a doação de veneno para o selante de fibrina, por exemplo, agora vivem em caixas individuais com controle de umidade e temperatura. Antes, era um cativeiro em iglu.

Tudo é feito para que o cativeiro intensivo seja o menos agressivo possível. A bióloga Luciana de Barros, uma das responsáveis pelo manejo no serpentário do CEVAP, explica que cada serpente tem uma personalidade: tem as mais tranquilas e outras mais agitadas.

Quando o Globo Rural gravou esta reportagem pela primeira vez, as cobras, na hora da extração do veneno, eram contidas pelo gancho e pelas mãos sem luvas do técnico, que mantinha a roupa do dia a dia. Algumas escapavam expondo o manipulador ao risco de um bote. Hoje, segue-se a estrita norma laboratorial. Ao conduzir a cobra, ela recebe um torpedo de CO2 para que fique semi-anestesiada para depois ter o veneno extraído.

Investimentos na pesquisa

Além das mudanças nos processos, a cola de fibrina, na época, era feita com sangue humano. Hoje, é usado sangue de búfalo, por cortesia de um produtor rural que se comoveu com o projeto.

Aristides Pavan é o empresário, que movido por uma história familiar, disponibilizou uma parte do rebanho para as pesquisas da UNESP. A mãe dele, Luiza Ravan, assim como Vera Freddo, sofria com úlceras nas pernas. Ela passou a vida inteira lidando com o problema.

Aristides diz que, de certa forma, se conforta com a possibilidade de ajudar as pessoas a evitar um sofrimento que ele acompanhou tão de perto. Por isso, ele se dispôs a fazer uma coisa que não é fácil: manter por conta um grupo de 100 cabeças de búfalos exclusivamente destinados à pesquisa. Isso é muito caro e, na maioria das vezes, impossível para instituições científicas.

Um rebanho soro produtor de búfalos fica isolado de outros animais da fazenda e se submete a rigorosos controles de sanidade para ter a certificação da ANVISA e se adequar aos protocolos médicos internacionais.

A doutora Lucilene de Lazari conta que a colaboração de Aristides trouxe um impulso importante nas pesquisas do CEVAP. O sangue do búfalo não oferece os riscos de contaminação que o sangue humano traz para a fabricação do selante.
